A 13-year-old Kansas eighth-grader who has been wearing a purse since August was suspended from school on Wednesday because he refused to take off his designer handbag. Skyler Davis, a brave and relentless young man, stood his ground and refused to take off the bag as he claimed it was a means of expression.
Skyler’s mom was distressed when she found out the reason why her son was suspended and she called the school to verify.
“I was a little furious, and I called the school [and spoke to Hillard] to reverify the story, and yeah, he refused to take off his Vera Bradley bag, nothing more to it.” She continued “Skyler can speak freely about what’s bothering him. I have taught him this. Now the school is upset because he spoke out.”
Skyler feels he has been the target of gender discrimination since apparently girls wear their purses all the time to school and never have been sent home as a result.
“I don’t think everyone should be treated differently. Everyone should have the same privileges,” Davis says.
And anyone with a heart and common sense will undeniably agree with you, Skyler.
On the plus side, while the school refuses to accept any blame for this incident, the Vera Bradley company have offered the family free products for all the free promotion they have been receiving from the story.
