The Miss Universe 2015 pageant took an eerie and confusing turn on Sunday night when host Steve Harvey misread the cue card and awarded the crown to Miss Colombia and not Miss Philippines.
The mistake left Miss Colombia as Miss Universe for two whole minutes.
Harvey’s slip-up rivals the a day that will forever live in infamy as the media’s premature announcement of the 2000 presidential election.
In the Miss Universe contest, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo from Colombia was crowned the winner before a mortified host Steve Harvey retracted his statement saying:
“OK, folks, um, I have to apologize. The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines.”
The camera immediately panned to show a shocked Miss. Colombia.
As Harvey said he read the names on the cards in the wrong order.
Harvey then tried to reconcile by saying:
“I will take responsibility for this, it was my mistake. It’s on the card … horrible mistake, but I can show it to you right here,” he said, holding up the card.”
This isn’t the first time a host got too antsy and embarrassed himself.
Sarah Murdoch did it in 2010 on Australia’s Next Top Model and The Associated Press did it in the 2000 election.
At 7:50 pm in 2000, The Associated Press declared Al Gore the victor of the State of Florida and the presidency.
Less than 2 hours later, networks retracted the statement saying the election was to close to call.
Then the following morning all hell breaks loose as the election becomes a disaster as the media got too greedy.
There’s something different about this though.
Harvey’s mistake lasted 2 minutes and The Associated Press’ lasted 8 years or as Bette Midler said:
Midler is right though, Harvey’s mistake barely rivals what occurred in 2000.
Harvey’s mistake didn’t cost the American people trillions of dollars, induce two wars, cause irreparable damage to American infrastructure, allow No Child Left Behind, slash social services, and send the American economy tumbling towards Recession.
Some people would say that’s merely water under the bridge; we should laugh at Steve Harvey and once again give the “crown” to Miss. Divine herself.
