The people’s Senator, Bernie Sanders (I-VT) spoke to Ed Schultz on his radio show yesterday and explained all of the things that are wrong with the current stalemate in Congress which has led to the shutdown, along with the looming prospect of a default if the debt ceiling is not raised in less than a week.
He addressed Paul Ryan, citing his op-ed which appeared in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, telling him that what he is asking for are all of the things that the American people rejected last November when they voted against the platform that he and Mitt Romney ran on.
In his editorial, Ryan said that he and his fellow TEApublicans would be willing to vote to raise the debt ceiling if the President and Democrats would just sit down and negotiate for cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
As Bernie so accurately points out, this is blackmail to institute the plan that he and Romney ran and lost on.
He also said that if we did this it would be the end of our democracy as we know it. Elections would no longer have any meaning, it would not matter what we the people want, we would get whatever the extortionists want instead.
As he says, the TEApublicans are in the pocket of the Koch brothers who have no moral compass at all. While they can, with a fortune of $70 billion, obtain the best healthcare that the world has to offer, they are willing to deny any kind of healthcare to a child with cancer.
The Democrats have, contrary to the rhetoric from the far right, made concessions. Sanders said that he voted for a terrible CR based on the understanding that Reid and Boehner had reached an agreement on it — only to have it rejected after the fact by Boehner and the fringe element of his party in the House.
As always Bernie was plain spoken and pulled no punches.
