Bernie Sanders is probably one of the best known politicians in the U.S. today. With 33 years of public service under his belt, he has never been shy about telling the public where he stands on the issues and what he sees as the problems facing the nation.
He has long been completely open in describing himself as a “socialist democrat” ignoring the negative connotation that the right insists on giving that title. When Bernie has something to say, he says it. When he sees a wrong, he calls it out and attempts to rectify it. He doesn’t care who he angers or offends, he knows what is right and he stands up for it.
Many progressives have felt for some time that Bernie would make a good Presidential candidate. While he has always shied away from even considering the job, lately he has been looking more and more like a man considering taking the leap and making a run for the office.
He has been traveling around the country, hitting all of the places that a politician gearing up for a Presidential campaign would traditionally hit. Now in an interview for Yahoo and ABC news, he told Jeff Zeleny what many have been waiting to hear him say for some time now — that he has “a damn good platform” to run for President on.
Zeleny asked him if a self identified democratic socialist could be elected to which Bernie replied:
“Once you guys begin to talk about what democratic socialism is about. If the American people understand what goes on in countries like Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and other countries, they will say, ‘Whoa, I didn’t know that!’
For example, in Denmark it goes without saying, as it does in virtually every other major industrialized country, healthcare is a right, R-I-G-H-T, it’s not a debate, in countries like Denmark the most conservative politicians say ‘it’s not a debate, of course everybody has a right to healthcare.”
