Senator Bernie Sanders joined MSNBC’s Ed Schultz to discuss the recent horror Republicans have perpetrated on our vets by cutting their SNAP benefits:
“It is an absolute outrage. The average veteran is not a wealthy person. The average veteran is elderly, and the average veteran is struggling. The reality is, 76% of the people who receive food stamps, they’re either elderly, they’re either disabled, or they are in families with low income kids, and to cut those programs is to simply make people in this country go hungry. And I gotta tell ya, Ed, these are the same folks who are cutting food stamps for kids and for veterans, who want to give huge tax breaks to billionaires and corporations. That is not what the American people want,” said Senator Sanders.
The Senator insisted that Republicans cannot keep beating down people who are already hurting. He’s right. While this country has never faced such high poverty rates, Congress cannot continue to cut benefits for vets, the elderly and disabled, or the children while giving colossal tax breaks to multi-billion dollar corporations.
“What the Republicans are trying to do is balance the budget on the backs of the most vulnerable people in this country. Meanwhile, at the same time, they’re working as hard as they can to provide huge tax breaks or maintain huge tax breaks for large corporations. One out of four corporations in this country does not pay a nickel in federal taxes.”
Some of the most profitable industries in the world receive billions of dollars in subsidies from taxpayers every year. These preferential tax rates for select industries alter free market forces and put Congress in the position of selecting winners and losers.
The industries that receive millions from our government are using that money to hire lobbyists or contribute to campaigns to ensure these subsidies remain in place. Federal subsidies to profitable corporations are a waste of tax dollars, and Congress should eliminate them immediately. They should not keep food from our vets, our children, or our grandparents. The time is now to hold Republicans liable for their dishonorable actions towards vets, children, and the elderly. The American people deserve better treatment from our government.
