Ben Carson isn’t always the most thoughtful individual. After all, he’s pandering to a base that lives in an alternative reality. And he continued that pandering this week at an NRA annual meeting, where he told the audience that Americans needed guns to defend themselves from “radical extremist Islamic terrorists.”
Watch out everyone, here comes the Weekend Warrior Brigade. Carson warned them that they needed their guns now more than ever, as the southern border had been thoroughly compromised by these “radical extremist Islamic terrorists” — terrorists that President Obama doesn’t intended to fight.
Funny, I thought the only terrorists that Obama was reluctant to bomb into oblivion were right-wing ones who usually vote Republican.
Carson told the audience, “When they get here we need to be able to fight them, particularly if we have an administration that won’t fight them, we need to be able to fight them ourselves.”
Shooting a suicide bomber is rather pointless. The idea is to get yourself killed, so I doubt that guns are going to be useful. And no, you’re probably not shooting them before they go off, John Wayne. Your energy is better spent running in the other direction.
I also don’t see how you can shoot the maker of an IED or a car bomb. They’re long gone by the time it detonates. The same is true for a dirty bomb.
It’s also true for the terrorist who realizes our fast food industry is an excellent vector for a biological contagion like, say, weaponized E. Coli. Most workers don’t get sick days, so they’re forced to come in regardless how they feel if they want to keep their job — and some can’t even report dangerous food to the authorities without getting fired.
What I’m saying is this: your magical invulnerability talisman ain’t saving you from a terrorist, Bubba. In most cases, it’ll be beyond useless.
Carson, however, is pandering to a group of intellectually stunted cowboy wannabes. Guns, he added, are necessary for people to “defend themselves against an overly aggressive government that wanted to exact tyranny in this country.”
Unless that tyrant is Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, or some other right-wing, ultrareligious existential threat to the country. Then you use your guns to support them, because they’re “exacting tyranny” on the people you disagree with.
