Dr. Ben Carson may have gifted hands but that gift apparently stops short of his brain. At least when it comes to reasoning. Though evolution has been proven many times over, Carson still thinks it is a “myth.” Besides having little grasp of what the word “myth” means and how it applies to his belief system, he appears not to understand how time works.
But when you worship a Sky-Daddy like Carson does, you can endow him with any traits you wish. Carson has given his God the ability to travel through time. No mention of a TARDIS, though.
For a medical doctor, Carson shows an appalling lack of understanding about science. See if you can follow this fact-like phrase:
“(Humans) think that they are so smart that if they can’t explain how God did something, then it didn’t happen, which of course means that they’re God. You don’t need a God if you consider yourself capable of explaining everything.”
The first rule of science is that we can’t explain everything. That’s why we keep experimenting, questioning and continuing to test our theories. Unlike the arrogant Carson, we know that we don’t know everything.
Carbon dating, according to Carson, doesn’t mean anything to his God, who can create anything at any point in time. Time? His God scoffs at time! Consequently, we really can’t know the age of the earth because God could have created it at any time. I guess Carson thinks that the stars are God’s night lights.
Then Carson goes where many a creationist treads when they think they have science over a barrel: the human eye. Evolution, he says, cannot explain that — ha! Once again, Carson shows a breathtaking lack of understanding of, not only evolution, but his own mythos:
“According to their scheme, it (the eye) had to occur overnight, it had to be there. I instead say, if you have an intelligent creator, what he does is give his creatures the ability to adapt to the environment so he doesn’t have to start over every 50 years creating all over again.”
Did you get that? He’s so confused about evolution that he attributes the instant creation of the eye to that process and then says that God made the eye evolve. So God gives his creatures the ability to adapt? Carson has described one process of evolution and attributed it to his God. He’s so bass-ackwards he doesn’t even understand what he’s arguing for or against.
Just to be clear, evolution has explained the eye. Scientists have hypothesized that our eyes evolved over about 364,000 years, beginning with a light-sensitive spot on the skin. Each adaptation that aided survival led to the evolution of the various parts of the eye. Humans don’t even have the best eyes available, either. Cats see better in the dark, eagles have sharper vision, even the lowly butterfly can see better than us. By Carson’s reasoning — and I use that word very loosely — God short-changed humans!
Hey, Ben Carson, leave the science to the scientists, okay?
