On his Fox show Wednesday night, Sean Hannity reveled in a report from the TEApublican-controlled House Oversight Committee, which alleges that the Obama administration created an “ambiance” which encouraged the IRS to target Tea Party groups seeking 501(c)(4) status. Hannity presented the report as a “smoking gun” which he thinks will finally bring down this President, as assertion which prompted Bob Beckel to tell him he was full of it.
Fox contributor Jedediah Bila told Beckel that while the President may not have directly ordered them to target the Tea Party, he and the rest of the party “encouraged that kind of behavior” by relentlessly attacking them which supposedly caused the IRS to think they should go after the conservative groups.
In response, Beckel rightfully pointed out that many of the Tea Party organizations should never have been granted tax exempt status in the first place because the activities in which they wanted to engage aren’t permitted. He explained that the exemption these groups were seeking does not allow the main objective to be political in nature. What he left out is that the way the IRS has always applied the law is not in agreement with the language of the law, which requires that they engage only in social welfare activities — no politics at all.
