Islamaphobia and AQAP. So what does the Al Qaeda in the Arabic Peninsula have to do with current terrorist attacks on American soil? This has been the line of questioning I have been finding on several fringe “Conservative” blogs. I mean, how awesome would it be for your readers if you could find a common link between all these terrorist activities and give them an easy label to throw their anger at? Well, I seriously have my doubts about AQAP being the Legion of Doom that they seem to want it to be.
Estimates of the remaining Al-Qaeda’s numbers are pretty bleak, with Wikipedia claiming that around a few hundred are believed to be active. Our drone strikes have been focused on these groups since 2010 and have many Americans uneasy about the idea of unmanned missile strikes, but I prefer to replace the word “drone” with “flying machine with missiles”. I think that pretty much covers most of our air power, and it doesn’t sound as insane to argue over the ethics. And besides… only a few hundred? Not hundreds of thousands? Not even thousands? Hundreds? This means that people are willing to demonize over a billion people just because a few hundred of them are criminals. By that standard we would be needing to have multiple drone strikes upon Christians who turned into terrorists. Should we be demonizing ALL religion? Or can we just deal with the way the 1st Amendment is written and let sleeping dogs lie?
But that isn’t human nature. If the Boogey Man doesn’t have a label, then we can’t defeat him. Anders Breivik usually invokes that knee-jerk reaction which goes something like,
“That guy isn’t a Christian!” or “He stopped being a Christian when he committed a crime!”
Well… that can be said about any religion. I’m not the one to be dictating to people what they believe but I think we can all agree that our beliefs should never impinge upon our society. That just sets up what those original settlers of this country were trying to escape from in the beginning. Freedom to believe what you want to believe without being persecuted for it.
The connection of AQAP to the Boston bombers, the Benghazi embassy attacks, and a worldwide empire of terror is built on some pretty thin threads even though these people are definitely noteworthy of watching like hawks. First we have to assume that the attacks on the embassy in Libya were in fact revenge for the killing of an AQAP leader (ergo, the jackwagons can beat their chests about Obama’s foreign policy failing from those drone strikes). Then we have to assume that Inspire magazine was the driving force of the Boston bombings. Then we have to put on foil hats and drink our own urine because the Commies are trying to steal our precious bodily fluids.
…Or support them if that is what you truly want…It’s a free country, and the laughs we get over the extreme nonsense is nearly enough to make it all okay.
