ThinkProgress reports that Pam Geller’s group, the American Freedom Defense Initiative, will be running six anti-Islamic ads on more than 100 buses in New York City starting next week. Writing on her website, Geller explained that the ads are designed to:
“raise awareness about the need for Muslims in the United States not just to denounce ISIS, but to teach young Muslims why this understanding of Islam is wrong and must be rejected.”
So is Geller going to follow this up with an ad campaign to “raise awareness about the need for Christians in the United States to not just denounce the right-wing Political Christianity, but also teach young Christians why this understanding of Christianity is wrong and must be rejected?”
Don’t hold your breath.
Geller continued, saying that the ad campaign:
“boldly tells truths that the U.S. government and the mainstream media seem determined to obfuscate.”
Geller’s Anti-Islamic hate group ads rely on shocking pictures and bold text.
Here are a few shocking examples, courtesy of New York Daily News:
Geller’s scare ads paint Muslims like they’re all ticking time bombs waiting to go off. They rely heavily on shocking pictures and bold text and range from ones that show a photo of James Foley kneeling beside his executioner juxtaposed beside a man rapping into microphone labeled “executioner who beheaded reporter before he became a jihadist” to ones that call for the U.S. to “end all aid to Islamic countries.” There are also ads attempting to connect Hamas to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
CAIR communications director, Ibrahim Hooper, told ThinkProgress that this sort of thing is business as usual for the AFDI, who are doing it just to get attention and solicit funding:
“This is her usual schtick: anti-Muslim bigotry,” Hooper said, referring to Geller. “Basically what she does is go into a market and introduce the most inflammatory, defamatory remarks that she can possibly come up with, knowing that it will all give her free publicity. Then, if the [local transit authority] denies her, she sues and gets more publicity.”
This isn’t the AFDI’s first time running offensive ads in public spaces that attempt to demonize Islam and Muslims. They group posted ads in Washington, D.C. and NYC in 2012 that referred to the enemies of Israel as “savages” and this summer, they ran posters on 20 buses in the United States Capital that included an image of Adolf HItler sitting next to Muslim leader Haj Amin al-Husseini with the caption “Islamic Jew-hatred: It’s in the Quran.”
And while a federal court ruled that the New York Metro Transit Authority had to run the ads regardless of content, the public transit authorities in Philadelphia (SEPTA) did not. As a result, the AFDI is doing what the Westboro Baptist Cult does best: they’re suing SEPTA in violation of free speech.
And if/when they win, do you think that it’ll make right wing Christians shut up about how “persecuted” they are in this country?
Yeah, I didn’t think so, either.
