The Christian right often trumpets itself as the champion of tradition. Except for traditions they don’t like — especially Halloween and the popular ritual of trick-or-treating. Autumn’s favorite holiday is rife with pagan symbols, conjuring fears among the most conservative Christians of Satanic influence being wielded over impressionable young minds. Forget about the “War on Christmas” they claim is being waged by the secular left. These would-be defenders of their faith like to wage their own little wars on Halloween.
Rather than exercising their right not to participate in Halloween traditions, they much prefer exorcising other people’s good spirits. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, some local anti-choice zealots decided that children deserved something more colorful than candy corn in their treat bags: Pamphlets with pictures of fetuses were just the trick.
The timing isn’t just related to Halloween either. There is currently a push by local anti-choicers to enact a city-wide ban on abortions at the 20-week mark. Nothing says civic activism like trolling a child’s Trick-or-Treat bag with political propaganda. In their attempt to pervert Roe v. Wade, the supreme law of the land, they won’t let harmless fun like children collecting candy go untainted. Halloween in Albuquerque never stood a ghost of a chance this year with the fun-sucking vampires of the American Taliban.
