The Republican House failed to garner enough votes necessary to pass the temporary stop-gap in DHS funding, which means at 12:01, the agency will have no funding and approximately 300,000 employees will be sent home while another 87% will be required to come in and work, but not get paid for it.
How long, do you think, before the right-wing propaganda machine starts blaming this one on the Democrats?
The story of the Little Bill That Wasn’t is a complicated tale. It was bounced from House to Senate and back again, with anti-executive order language plugged in, then stripped out, and then it all together failed when Boehner couldn’t muster the votes necessary to pass it.
It’s a sad and predictable mess.
MSNBC notes that the shut down means that 87% of DHS employees — including members of the Coast Guard, the TSA, and other organizations — will be required to show up for work but not get paid (one assumes they’ll get back-pay as soon as Congress straightens this out). Likewise, an additional 300,000 will be furloughed.
Take a second to marvel at this irony: the DHS includes border patrol. Border patrol keeps undocumented immigrants out. Why did the Republicans kill this funding bill? Because they couldn’t get their anti-executive order language in the bill, which was spurned by Obama’s executive order on — wait for it — immigration.
So they shut down the border patrol in their attempt to deport undocumented immigrants. This isn’t cutting off the nose; this is ramming a Desert Eagle in the right nostril and pulling the trigger.
I’d suggest someone didn’t think this through, but you know what? These are Republicans. At this point, I’m pretty sure they’re incapable of independent thought, and the only thing they know is Duckspeak and Bellyfeel. Big Brother has taught them well.
