You may need to re-calibrate your irony meter after reading this.
It’s been a while since I heard from Ann Coulter, and I’d be lying if I said I haven’t enjoyed the hiatus. Coulter, a professional troll on the right-wing, has long since been over-shadowed by her sincere peers.
But she’ll be damned if she’s going to let them take all the spotlight. During a Wednesday appearance on Drain-O Huffing with Steve Doocy and Friends, nationally syndicated as Fox and Friends, Coulter basically called to resurrect Jim Crow by saying the US needed ‘literacy tests’ at the polls.
During a segment on how poorly informed the voters are (a reminder: they’re complaining about this on Fox), Host Brian Kilmeade, himself a monument to human stupidity, asked Coulter whether it bothered her that her vote counted just as much as someone who knew nothing about politics.
Isn’t it bad for business to attack your audience?
Coulter, however, has a paycheck to collect, regardless of who’s being attacked:
More than I can say. I just think it should be, well for one thing, a little more difficult to vote. There’s nothing unconstitutional about literacy tests.
Literacy tests were used throughout the south to disenfranchise black voters and are one of the core features of the Jim Crow Laws. Not that Coulter, or anyone on Fox, cares.
Fellow guest Nomiki Konst, the executive director of the Accountability Project, noted that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 made literacy tests illegal; Coulter, however, maintained that voting was “too easy:”
We have ballots being given in 124 different languages. And I’m pretty sure Senate debates will not be taking place in Urdu. So what are they voting on?
Coulter added that she was fine with letting “Democrats do all of the vote theft they can get away with,” but only within “one 24-hour period.”
When Konst pointed out that civic education in schools was important for creating informed citizenry, Coulter of course balked, saying:
Maybe we can check to see if they can name the vice president before letting them vote. As for more civic education, that usually means the 12 years of Chinese-style propaganda in public schools, which only means you are dumber than someone who has not gone to school.
Gotta slip that anti-intellectualism in there; after all, she’s appealing to the very uninformed voters she’s condemning; it’s a fascinating, postmodern surrealist take on satire.
And it figures she’d hate Chinese-style propaganda; it undermines her party’s own North Korean-style propaganda.
Coulter concluded by noting that Democrats, in addition to committing vote theft, benefit from uninformed voters, saying, “Is a completely ignorant voter better for the Democratic Party or the Republican Party? The Democratic Party.”
Teabaggers aren’t Democrats last time I checked.
