Angry Grieving Father Confronts Clueless, Bullying Abortion Clinic Protesters (Video)

In this compelling video, distraught father Aaron Gouveia tells a couple of hateful, judgmental protesters who are screaming generic one-liners at people entering an abortion clinic what he thinks of their nasty tactics.

“You’re killing your unborn baby!”

That’s what they yelled at me and my wife on the worst day of our lives. As we entered the women’s health center on an otherwise perfect summer morning in Brookline, two women we had never met decided to pile onto the nightmare we had been living for three weeks. These “Christians” verbally accosted us—judged us—as we steeled ourselves for the horror of making the unimaginable, but necessary, decision to end our pregnancy at 16 weeks.

After extensive testing at a renowned Boston hospital three weeks earlier, we were told our baby had Sirenomelia. Otherwise known as Mermaid Syndrome, it’s a rare (one in every 100,000 pregnancies) congenital deformity in which the legs are fused together. Worse than that, our baby had no bladder or kidneys. Our doctors told us there was zero chance for survival.

I’m not a religious person and I’ve never believed in heaven or hell. But there is a hell on Earth. Hell is sitting next to the person you love most and listening to her wail hysterically because her heart just broke into a million pieces. Hell is watching her entire body convulse with sobs because she’s being tortured with grief. For as long as I live and no matter how many children we have, I will never forget that sound. And I vowed to do everything in my power to make sure she’d never make it again.

Across a crowded street, two people with “God Is Pro-Life!” signs and pictures of torn-up fetuses managed to drive the blade in even deeper. Again, I was left trying to console the inconsolable, feeling even more helpless this time, because I wasn’t allowed into surgery with her.

Running on pure adrenaline, and without even a hint of a plan, I grabbed my cell phone and crossed the street. I didn’t know what to say or how to say it, I just knew I wanted to make public the cowardice of these protesters.

Awesome! I hope he really got them to start thinking for themselves. What these people do is shameful. At best, their actions will create a new form of psychopath. At worst, some woman, who had no other choice but to ruin her life is driven to utter despair by these pious lobotomy cases.

  • Bert Loehrer

The prolife movement and now the powerful gun lobby are pawns of corporate greed. They distract the public with these issues while they try to unravel Government regulation. Koch Brothers will spend billions on trying to not pay taxes because they do no believe in government, especially one democratically elected. They give money to these movements and meanwhile the fox is in the hen house and nobody even notices.

  • Sephia8

They aren’t “Abortion Clinics” they are Women’s Health Centers!
If we keep calling them “Abortion Clinics” then people keep viewing them as baby murder centers instead of what they really do and provide . . like cancer screening, birth control information and help, pap smears, gynecological exams and screenings and so much more!

  • CJ

What I find most interesting about people like that is most of them support the death penalty…but call themselves “pro-life”. How can you support one and not the other? Basically it’s “don’t you dare kill that baby but once it’s born I really don’t give a s**t about it.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/kailyn.wilbanks Kailyn Wilbanks

I am so moved by the courage this young father displayed in his eloquent discussion with the cowardly agitators. He correctly nails the issue – when they could be donating their time to real kids in need, making a difference, their idea of doing good is shaming people, imposing their mores on others – the lowest common denominator – for sure. Thank goodness for this young man. We need more people willing to speak to these folks – and let them know, we do not appreciate their interference in very sensitive family matters. IT IS NON OF THEIR BUSINESS, yet they insert themselves in the middle of it. Time for them to be called out!

    • Peggy

Maybe the unborn are “real kids in need.”

      • http://www.facebook.com/deonne.williams.54 Deonne Williams

When you start feeding the children who already go hungry every night because of “Pro-Life” advocates you can make that comment. You are not Pro-Life, you are Pro Birth, because you don’t care what happens to that baby once it is born and you sure as heck don’t want social programs to support it. New flash and fact: If you provide no cost/low cost birth control and good family planning information you have LESS abortions. Reason number one to never defund Planned Parenthood.

      • CJ

Well if you help those who already exist there would be LESS of those abortions. The majority of abortions are done by young women.

I thank goodness there were no protesters when I went to the hospital in Chapel Hill to have a medical abortion. Why did I do that? Because the back of my baby’s skull did not form leaving her brain exposed ( a severe form of spina bifida). She would have died in child birth and if not then it’d been not long after because it was that severe. I was going to go through with it…but then I realized that was SELFISH of me to do that to her. Why put her through that agony only to die because it would have been agony for her. Instead…I had a induced labor so that her passing was peaceful and allowed the doctors to do genetic testing to see if this was a inherited condition.

But if most of those protesters had their way…I would not have been allowed to do that and I would have spent the entire pregnancy in agony knowing that she was going to die in a very painful way to her.

It’s not the place of ANY person to tell a woman what she can do with her body. Is it a sin? If so…then let her answer to her god for it.

      • Larissa

I took it to mean if they were truly concerned with the unborn they’d be working with youth at risk for unplanned pregnancies/abortion before the unplanned pregnancies happen and maybe help prevent the unplanned pregnancies in the first place, instead of yelling filthy things at random people going to health clinics. Makes sense to me. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That really seems much more WWJD to me; I can see Jesus helping young folks at risk and helping them find direction in their lives, much more than I can see Jesus standing outside a health center yelling insults at random people entering it. Just sayin.

  • V

Thank You for going public with this. My husband and I made a similar decision with my daughter when I was 18 weeks pregnant. I was terrified of protesters, but more so because I was unsure of how I (or my husband) would handle them. Thankfully, we had no protesters during my three day ordeal, but the idea still haunts me.

I am in awe of your strength to share this. it’s taken me months to be able to speak about it in public (my WordPress blog doesn’t count). I’m heading to Austin on Monday to try and testify for those of us who have had to face tfmr

  • Calvinist

Key words that video, “nearly dead”. If its dying, why are you getting an abortion?

    • patludy

Probably to save the mother’s life….

    • http://twitter.com/PlumStChili PlumStChili (@PlumStChili)

      Boy are you stupid.

    • Janey

Because the idea of carrying a dead fetus around in your uterus, waiting for it to abort natuarlly, is really horrifying and sickening. And sometimes they *don’t* abort naturally, but they do sometimes start to decay naturally. Not really healthy–mentally or physically–for the mother.

Or, more to the point–you are getting an abortion *because* it is dying. Why wouldn’t you get an abortion? Not much point in delaying the inevitable; it just drags the heartache out (and sometimes threatens the mother’s life as well).

    • http://www.facebook.com/MagicLady1945 Carol-Lee Armstrong Kehoe

Maybe so she doesn’t have to carry a dead baby for 9 months. Are you as stupid as you sound?

    • Caitriona

If not for the abortion, when the infant dies, the mother would either have to go through labor for a stillborn infant, have a D&C to remove the “remains,” or have the mother develop gangrene and die as the infant begins to decay in her womb.

    • Lina

@ Calvinist, you’re obviously a man. I’d like someone to stick a dead baby inside of you, leave it there for as long as I want (and no, I’m not a doctor) then make you go through childbirth, just because of my own personal beliefs, which may or may not be yours … but you have to do what I say anyway because I feel like it. Have you ever had a child die? What do you do? You bury it. Now, imagine having a child die and carrying it inside of you because of a group of non-doctors with beliefs different from yours

      • barbara wills

I lived that horror in 1968……I never would make another woman go through that.

    • Jack Mulligan

If you’re a Calvinist, why are you making questions about choice in the first place? Calvinists don’t believe in free will.

  • Jessa

Bless this man for standing up and doing what’s right. If these women were Christians, than they’d know the Jesus said, “Judge not, lest you be judged” — thus they can’t be all shocked if while they’re out judging people, people are going to judge them back. And rightly so.

  • tielle willis

“She paints her world in yellow and green,
    Covering over the gray
Cuz life’s demands arehard to understand
    So.Alice stays lost in rher Wonderland;
Oh and Alice look aound you
    People are falling to cpieces,
    Yah, even the faithful,
The ones who still belie e in Jesus
But that doesn’t mean thathey fallen.from grace
In their anguish her landscape is so out of place…”
    - Susan Ashton

The political extremes on hboth sides over simplify and demonize those who hold a different view. When you actually listen to real live people caught in the middle, and sit with them itheir stories, the static images melt. It’s easy for people to believe in their causes until they are confronted heart to heart with someone who’s anguish.makes their landscape so out of place.

So I ask myself, case by case and person by person, “what does love look like here, and how might I best offer it to this hurting person.” ….Even the ones who are using their hurt and fear to harm others so that they can stay in the delusion that life is simple.

  • stace

i got into this same argument with a friend who is a christian and posts stuff on facebook about abortion clinics. I have a sister in law that had to make the tough decision to abort her baby at 12 weeks because she found out she had cancer and could not put the baby through the torture her body was about to endure. she had to do chemo and radiation. but these people that are supposed to be doing “gods work” would not know that. They would berate her and call her names as she walked into a medical center already greiving for the loss of her child and not knowing if she will live to have another. I still could not convince this friend how wrong she was for posting such crap. Its so sad. I am not a religious person but I feel like I have a lot more empathy and compassion then a lot of these bible thmpers

    • Glenda Whiteside

NO DOUBT YOU DO. YOU SOUND LIKE A VERY COMPASSIONATE PERSON. THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT TRUE CHRISTIANS AND THEY SHOULD MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS.

    • Jessa

I have the sneaking suspicion that many of the Bible thumpers out there haven’t actual ready the Bible — just the bile that their “religious leaders” spew forth.

      • Juliet

They read the Bible: the same few pages and the same few verses on those pages.

  • Max

This is mild compared to mobs of hateful people I saw when doing clinic defense in Melbourne, Florida years ago. As much as we tried to protect those coming to the clinic it was hard to drown out the hate they spewed toward a person they did not even know. Those of us doing clinic defense found the anti crowd was even able to get our home information from our car’s license tags (most likely a fellow anti in the police department) and some faced harassment at home and work. The doctors and clinic owner had become used to the ongoing threats and property damage. I can only hope there is a special place in hell for those that live their life following the teaching of love by demonstrating blind hate.

    • http://twitter.com/PlumStChili PlumStChili (@PlumStChili)

There is a way to push back effectively without being rude or violent. It works.

I really salute this man for making a stand on what he believes in. I just hope everyone of us would make a stand, too.

  • Steve

great for him! he kept his composure alot better than i could have, i was getting worked up just watching the video. i would have laid into them especially the idiot holding the picture of Jesus. if these people’s religion is right, aren’t they going to be surprised when they find themselves burning in hell lol

  • Amanda

Good for him. Did that lady really threaten to call the cops? She thinks she has every right to stand on the street and scream hateful things at people when she has zero idea of what is going on in their lives but she doesn’t think that he has the right to stand there and say what he likes to them? Hilarious. More people should do this. Shame the shamers, I say.

  • BigGuy

I admire your forbearance in how you spoke with these women who had treated your wife badly. Also, I think using your cell phone to record this video was wise.

  • CD

Wondering what the supposed kids the one woman claimed she adopted are doing while she’s out being a screaming streetwalker. Are they at home alone, being molested, out getting knocked up, doing drugs while she’s out on her misguided, judgemental crusade ?- These are the people that care only about fetuses until they are born then the mother is disparaged and discarded, the baby if not a “showpiece” is neglected and dumped on the “system” and we spend 40k a year apiece of taxpayer dollars when they end up in jail. All because these hypocritical “christians” only advocate indescriminate breeding and encouraging rapists and child molestors in their “URGE TO BREED” with NO personal responsibility for the RESULTS of their narrow-minded advocacy.
Funny that these same people are not too worried about rapists and child molestors and apparently want to reward such scum for forcibly impregnating women and young girls since several states give such scum “parental rights” to their rape spawn.

  • B. Cloutier

Would you PLEASE post transcripts of videos! I am one of Romney’s 47% who lives off of the federal dole — I am disabled an live on Social Security Disability, and cannot afford to replace my 5-yo laptop with a bad sound card.

  • Nicole

I’m sad to say I used to be like those women, I wouldn’t stand outside abortion clinic but every year I would go to a rally on the anniversary of Roe v Wade and protest at the MN capital. I was one amoung hundreds but I would like to apologize to anyone that those people upset, we may have had the consitutional right to protest but we had no human right to make you feel that way.
Luckily I have grown up now but I would like to say sorry for anyone that I might have hurt, I was literally a child with the mind of a child. The people who stand out there today still have the minds of children even if they are adults. They are stuck in their fanatsy world, I don’t ask you to forgive them or pity though, they keep themsevles ignorant to reality. The only thing I ask is that you do not given into their terroristic threats and believe in your choice and in yourself because chances are is that if you do the less crazy ones will listen to you and you might even change their minds.

    • CJ

Bless you Nicole. You are one of very few who ever change their mind about a subject such as this.

  • Gregg

Thank you for standing up to these evil people who claim to be Christians. It’s absolutely disgusting what these people do.
If it wasn’t for Planned Parenthood my wife would not have received the prenatal care she needed when pregnant with my daughter and we could have lost them both. We didn’t have medical coverage at the time because I had just started a new job. Of course, these simpletons don’t want to hear any success stories where Planned Parenthood is involved. I will be forever grateful to them for my amazing 17 year old daughter.

    • CJ

They don’t care about all the other services that PP provides. Some clinics don’t even provide abortion services themselves. My daughter went to them for awhile to get her female exams done and to get appropriate birth control. There is so much good in the services they provide to low income families.

  • Margery Franzen

This is a brave man who defends his wife, in her time of misery, I cannot understand how the anti -woman just flipped her hand at him, like it does not matter, to her. She an d her ilk re whoring for the Vatican. The Pope who fought even the irth controlpill for decades at the World health Center meetings, when concerned people whould broach the subject of the Pill. THese women do not care about the mother they want her toc arry this dead fetus to term, like a cow. they want to aee tht she dies forma miscarriage, just like before abortion was legalized. theya are shameful excuses of women and are just mudering females with theri pontific attidtudes. get me bor n so the priests can sodimize em .6years in the confessionals.

  • Chris C

Lol, what did they thing calls the cops was going to do?

  • Pat Ludy

Wish those in Arkansas would read this …

    • Kris

Why? They aren’t going to change their screwed up hate filled minds.

    • Matt

Wish those in Arkansas would read. Period.

  • Jack Douglas Miller

The sad part is that these judge’mental’ simpletons actually believe that they are good Christians. They claim they are doing God’s Work. Who gave them the authority to represent God and then condemn others? You wonder if they are literate enough to comprehend Jesus’ words in the Bible when he says ‘thou shall not judge’. BLIND FAITH…………….

  • liberty

Thank you, thank you for this video. Your commentary was brave and appreciated. You are one of the few men courageous enough to vent their anger towards stupidity on birth issues.

  • Roberta

I am glad he confronted these two women. But he will never get through to them. This is what
I am constantly saying, A woman who needs an abortion, will be denied an abortion because of women like these two who have no idea what they are protesting. They can quote all the Bible verses they want but I am sure the Lord is giving us a choice. He wants mothers to live and raise the children he has given them. He has His hand in medicine too.

  • Mary

I am so very sorry that he and his wife had to confront this. He is my hero

  • Beenthere

As someone who’s been a volunteer Guard(welcome to small Southern Town life folks) helping women like this poor distraught mans wife get safely into a clinic because of sick, fascist bastards like these,I have but one thing to say:”You sir are my HERO!”I’ve been spit on,had bottles thrown at me,my life and my children’s lives threatened by such disgusting wastes of human flesh(so much for being”ProLife,it’s all about Pro CONTROL)and had the Police do NOTHING but warn ME if I so much as said a word back to them.Needless to say it got physical REAL quick the day I had to walk a 12 year old in who had been raped, and they started throwing things at her&myself.I had to pick her up&carry her with her head down because they were also trying to take her picture for their”Wall of Shame”.They got a bottle back at them&their camera busted.I went to jail, got disturbing the peace, they got NOTHING.But the little girl made it safely in,but she is now further traumatized and her rapist still walks because she’s too afraid to testify, afraid these Reichwingers will come after her.

It is WAY past time these traitors are confronted&exposed for what they REALLY are,Domestic Terrorists straight from Hitler’s Playbook&hauled off to GITMO where the rest of Terrorists like themselves belong, and they can take the entire GOP/TEA&it’s followers with them.Remember, one of the first things Hitler did was outlaw any Abortion as well as Atheists,Gays, promoted”Family Values”&believed whole heartedly that he was doing”God’s work”.It’s Ok to invoke Hitler when the folks you’re discussing are following in his exact footsteps.Sign me,A Liberal with a CCW&a Glock 9MM .Thanks to idiots like these,I need them BOTH.

  • Juleecm1

Good for this man for standing up to these poor, uninformed women. Good for him for standing up for his wife, and for abortion clinics. Yes, he was angry, for good reason. What’s their excuse?

    • AATTP

They’ve been methodically brainwashed into believing they have been personally chosen by God himself to pass judgment and save all the unborn babies. In other words, they’re insane.
