The next time your crazy, Islamophobic Tea Party uncle starts rambling on about how all Muslims are TEH EVILZ, make sure you link him to this. At a demonstration Monday in Dearborn, Michigan, Muslim citizens denounced the Islamic State as “enemies of humanity” for their butchery and ruthlessness.
Dearborn, which has one of the highest Muslim populations in the country, hosted the demonstration at their City Hall. The Detroit Free Press reports that Muslim leaders gathered on Monday to strongly condemn ISIS, saying that the group didn’t represent Islam or Muslims.
According to one of the demonstrators, Imam Mohammad Elahi, ISIS members are “crazy criminals who are abusing our religion.” The leader of the Islamic House of Wisdom in Dearborn Heights called them “a bunch of gangsters” and said that they weren’t Islamic.
Around 50 attended the rally. Among those in attendance were a few local imams, such as Osama Siblani, publisher of Arab American News, Dawud Walid, director of the Michigan chapter on American-Islamic Relations, and Steve Spreitzer, president and CEO of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion.
While speaking before the crowd, Siblani called ISIS “enemies of humanity,” which seemed to be a general theme of the protest.
According to the IJ Review, there were two other, similar anti-Islamic State protests held earlier this summer as well.
Here are a few Vine videos from the event:
I suppose the real question is this: do you think it’s enough to sate the Islamophobic airheads in this country? Because I don’t think anything is enough to dampen their hate:
I believe there’s an old Latin saying to the effect of “haters gonna hate.” It’s good for the Dearborn Muslims to speak out, though; fundamentalists of all stripes need to know that people in their own community aren’t going to tolerate their destructive, anti-civilization habits.
