The old saying “gone over like a lead balloon” now has a corollary: “gone over like an atheist at CPAC.”
A speaker from the group American Atheists addressed a crowd a CPAC today, suggesting that conservatives should embrace the millions of secular Americans who do just fine without a God.
It went over as well as you would expect. After all, this is the party where 57% of a polled population wants the country to be a Christian State — which I’m pretty sure wouldn’t be friendly to atheists.
This year, the group actually got their own booth; CPAC pulled the plug on their plans for a booth last year. They received some attention too — but not much, if the speech is anything to go by.
Speaker Jamila Bey said there are millions of atheists that share the same values as religious conservatives (see, atheists aren’t perfect, and they’re not even uniformly intelligent). She asked the crowd to “embrace” secular-minded Americans stupid enough to buy the libertarian line, which are probably the only atheists who would vote GOP. Far and away the largest number of atheists are liberal, who want nothing to do with that sectarian train wreck.
The crowd’s reaction was predictably . . . lackluster.
