Alabama voters acted irresponsibly on many fronts. Not only did they vote straight GOP virtually across the board, but they made gun ownership a human right.
By an overwhelming vote of 73 to 27 percent, voters passed a constitutional amendment that places weapons above human life, making the ownership of firearms a fundamental human right in the state. Any legislation aimed at the safety of the population will not be subject to intense scrutiny — and, frighteningly, Amendment 3 may now be used to dismantle existing limits on the possession of weapons.
The amendment reads:
(a) Every citizen has a fundamental right to bear arms in defense of himself or herself and the state. Any restriction on this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.
(b) No citizen shall be compelled by any international treaty or international law to take an action that prohibits, limits, or otherwise interferes with his or her fundamental right to keep and bear arms in defense of himself or herself and the state, if such treaty or law, or its adoption, violates the United States Constitution.
Citizens also voted to explicitly ban Sharia law in the state’s constitution, leading one to wonder if something horrible is being pumped into the water supply in Alabama.
The classification of guns as a “human right” is truly perplexing, given their propensity to interfere with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness simultaneously.
