White pride advocates aired their grievances on C-SPAN recently, when the channel’s show, Washington Journal had people call in to discuss the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. One caller described himself as “much less liberal” now than he was back then. Another complained about the “war on white men,” and a third made one of the most insulting comments imaginable when it comes to racism and racial discrimination.
Both Talking Points Memo and Mediaite reported on this, saying that the first caller, Thomas, said how discrimination against the Irish, Italians and even Mormons is just totally ignored. Thomas said:
“You people will never, never discuss that. You only discuss the discrimination against the black people. And we pour more money into their schools than we do into any white schools, predominantly white schools.”
Thomas then says that he’s felt discrimination in his life because he’s of Irish descent, but trails off. Host Steve Scully didn’t ask for clarification.
In the first hundred years of this country’s existence, there was discrimination against a lot more than just black people, yes. That’s true. However, according to a paper written by Art McDonald, a social advocacy director and PhD, at least one of the ways that Irish Catholic immigrants escaped from their oppression here was to join their oppressors in oppressing blacks.
Throughout our history, the U.S. has had problems with discrimination against nearly everyone that’s not of English descent. But it’s never been as pervasive as racism and discrimination against blacks has been. And if the Irish joined in with black oppression, whatever the reasons, they become guilty, also.
As for schools, the country’s wealthier schools tend to be predominantly white, and those schools (especially under several states’ current funding plans) receive several times more funding than poorer schools, which tend to be predominantly black. And on average, we spend less on minority students than we do on white students. So no, we don’t actually spend more money on predominantly black schools than we do on predominantly white schools. That’s also true for colleges.
But let’s move on to the next caller. Danny wrote a tweet that that the “Washington Journal” flashed on the screen. It read, “The racist are those who set out to destroy the nations [sic] white identity, that is racist.”
He said on the show:
“I think it’s time for white men to start standing up because there’s all kinds of groups for other races. And I think it’s time for white pride. We have built this country — Irish, Italians, Germans, Irish, wherever they have come from, from Europe. No country in the world has produced what the white man has produced for every culture and race in America.”
One reason we don’t have white pride is because white pride is already everywhere. Same thing with white history. White history is everywhere in the U.S.; we don’t specifically recognize it, like we do with black history and women’s history, because we don’t need to. As far as “No country in the world has produced what the white man has produced for every culture and race in America,” an awful lot of what we’ve allegedly produced for them has been on their backs, and by their sweat and blood.
Racism is both hatred for a particular race, and a belief in the superiority of your own race. Danny’s comments are classically racist, “Nobody appreciates the white man” comments. Well, let’s see, white men still get paid more than pretty much everyone else. They hold a disproportionate number of the highest paying jobs in the country. They hold a disproportionate number of public offices, too. White men have never really had to fight for anything the way black people have, and the way women have. They ruled here from Day 1.
Then there’s Terry, from North Carolina. Terry thinks that blacks owe whites a big thank-you, because whites have done more for blacks than anybody, including blacks themselves. Like…refusing to fund their schools properly. Not paying them equally at work, despite the work being done.
Maintaining preferences for white-sounding names in hiring practices. Keeping separate lunch counters, drinking fountains and restrooms for them, so they wouldn’t use “white” facilities. Refusing to serve blacks altogether, and trying to use religion to justify that. Assuming black men are thugs and thieves because they’re black. And so forth. Yes, we’ve done so much for them here.
These white men need to check their white, male privilege at the door. Watch the whole video here:
