One the funniest moments from the Sunday morning talk shows over the weekend came from someone who was in no way trying to be funny. We all know that the GOP’s singular mission since January of 2009 has been to discredit and/or remove President Obama from office, and after that didn’t work they’ve tried 42 times now to repeal the president’s signature health care law. All of the attempts are purely symbolic since the Republicans don’t control the Senate, but that hasn’t stopped them from spending millions of taxpayer dollars fake-repealing the Affordable Care Act.
The message of repealing Obamacare has taken a new twist, with GOP congressional members saying that they’re going to insist that the president either accept a full defunding of Obamacare to get the debt ceiling raised, or as in the case of Rep. Justin Amash on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” they are suggesting that the ACA be delayed for all Americans for one full year. What got Amash genuine belly-laughs from the panel wasn’t his suggestion of a full delay; Republicans have been pushing that the last couple of weeks anyway.
What got the flood of laughter from the panel was Amash’s inane suggestion that he and his fellow TEApublicans are doing the “president a favor if we delay it, the program is not ready to be implemented. If anything, the president should be asking us to delay it because it’s better for him politically.” Talk about painting the rhetoric thickly! Even Matthew Dowd, a former strategist for President George W. Bush, couldn’t buy that line of GOP nonsense.
