If you wind up on satirist Stephen Colbert’s radar, you know that you’re in for a comedic beat down, and that’s exactly what the host of “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central gave Nevada State Assemblyman Jim Wheeler (R). With a brilliant dose of reality wrapped up in a shroud of truly biting satire, Colbert took Wheeler to task for comments that landed the Tea Party Republican in some hot water not just locally, but nationally.
Wheeler had been on record as telling the people of Nevada that he’d vote in any way the majority asked him to. On the face of it, that’s sort of what elected officials are supposed to do, so no big deal right? However, when asked by a local media outlet if that meant he’d vote for a return to slavery, instead of laughing off the question and saying, “Of course, not,” Assemblyman Wheeler instead said, “I’d have to bite my tongue and they’d probably have to hold a gun to my head, but yeah, […] if that’s what the constituency wants that elected me, that’s what they elected me for.” Ouch.
Colbert set about mocking Wheeler mercilessly.
“As he made clear on his web site in a carefully worded ‘explaination,’ the accusations against him are ‘absurd’ to ‘anyone that views the comments in context,'” Colbert said. “So let me give you the entire context to clear this up: someone said he would vote to bring back slavery, and he responded, ‘Yes, I would.’” Sometimes the most simple lines pack the most punch, and that one most certainly did.
