Senator Dick Durbin called out a top member of the House Republican leadership, slamming him for what he called a “disrespectful” comment made to President Barack Obama during recent negotiations to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling. The post came as a response to an often repeated talking point Republicans used during the shutdown — that President Obama just doesn’t want to talk to them.
On his official Faecbook page, the Illinois Democrat posted the following:
Many Republicans searching for something to say in defense of the disastrous shutdown strategy will say President Obama just doesn’t try hard enough to communicate with Republicans. But in a ‘negotiation’ meeting with the president, one GOP House Leader told the president: ‘I cannot even stand to look at you.’
What are the chances of an honest conversation with someone who has just said something so disrespectful?”
Durbin didn’t name the representative by name unfortunately, but it’s not hard to imagine any one of the many Republican members of the House of Representatives making this statement. Not after years of Fast & Furious, Benghazi, IRS “targeting,” and any other of the host of fake scandals they’ve attempted to pin on the president. As Senator Durbin said himself, it’s hard to see the president feeling much motivation to negotiate or reason with people who “cannot even stand to look” at him.
