Last week on “The Rachel Maddow Show,” the MSNBC host took a quarter of her show to excoriate one of her favorite toys, George W. Bush. The subject of the segment on Maddow’s show was the fact that Jews for Jesus, a religious sect whose mission is to convert Jewish people to the Protestant Christian faith in effort to bring about the second coming of Jesus Christ, and hence the end times for human civilization.
Maddow argued that since some of the same people who Dubya will be speaking in front of and for were holding meetings with the Bush Administration during the run-up to the Ira and Afghanistan War, that clearly they were pushing that administration in the direction of literally starting wars to bring about the end of humankind. It’s a heady charge, but one that she backed up with publicly available records of various White House meetings.
The veteran pundit made sure to point out that her objection to the relationship between Jews for Jesus and President Bush wasn’t on religious grounds per se, but that since part of their religious beliefs and practices is to try and bring about the end of civilization, that does in fact make for an acceptable policy debate. “everybody’s religious beliefs are their own, and by definition in this country, nobody’s religious beliefs are better than anyone else’s,” Maddow said. Though she concluded, “It does however become a news story and conceivably a matter of some debate when your belief that that’s what you’re supposed to do is driving U.S. foreign policy toward that theological aim. And when the people who make foreign policy in this country are consulting with you about what the United States ought to do abroad, then yes, yes, yes, that is news.”
