Carl Sciortino Jr. is an openly gay member of the Massachusetts House, and he is a Democrat. Sciortino is also a candidate to replace Senator Ed Markey in the United States House of Representatives. One thing is for certain after watching his first big entry into national office campaign ads — he hired a great team.
In his new ad — which is burning up the Internet and going viral — Sciortino “comes out” to his father, but not as a gay man. Everyone already knows Sciortino’s sexual orientation. For the purpose of the ad, Sciortino comes out to his real-life father as a liberal. Looking into the camera, the younger Sciortino says, “I’ll never forget that conversation with my dad where I had to come out and tell him that I was a Massachusetts liberal.”
For his part, the elder Sciortino plays the concerned, conservative father (which apparently he really is) to a tee. “He wants to go to Congress to take on the NRA and the tea party,” says Carl Sr. in the ad. With the election not set to take place until this December, that leaves plenty of time for Sciortino to release another ad, but his message in this one he says is that, “This race is not going to be about who the women’s candidate is or who the gay candidate is,” but rather, “who will be the progressive Democratic leader.”
