New Jersey Republican Senate candidate Steve Lonegan gets it. If by “it” of course I mean how to keep-up the perception among the general public that most Republicans truly don’t care how many poor and hungry people we have, because the answer to the problem is always just “work harder, hippie.” Lonegan became the latest in a long line of conservatives to question the need for food stamps programs, because according to him his mother didn’t need them when she was a poor, single, working mom…so why should any other woman?
What I’d personally like to ask Mr. Lonegan is if he thinks his mom could have used the help. I’d like to ask him what he thinks his mom would say to the government saying, “Hey, we know you’re working hard, but we don’t want your kids going hungry, so here’s just a little extra cash to help buy some groceries. Keep up the hard work!” Of course, to conservatives that’s not what food stamps programs are about ; to them the message is, “here’s some free stuff, hippie!”
Forget the fact that the working poor are already taking on more than one job to survive. Forget the fact that Republican economic policies gutted the middle class power base of organized labor. To Lonegan and his ilk, the problem is the poor people’s lack of effort, not any other reason, why they don’t have enough money to buy food. Hungry kids should blame their parents according to Lonegan, and not the politicians who are doing nothing to help their mothers, for any hunger they may feel in their lives…and they wonder why they’re not winning people over with their message?
