You’ve got to hand it to the House Republicans, when they pick a meme they run with it. During the 2010 mid-term elections, several of the Tea Party-backed candidates that wound up surging into office and giving the Republicans a majority in the House of Representatives, campaigned on a platform that included shutting down the Federal government if they couldn’t get their way.
But to hear them on the Sunday morning talk shows over the weekend, and at various press conferences and TV appearances this week, you’d think that the government shutdown was the worst thing they could possibly think of. They keep calling it the “Obama Shutdown” and they keep insisting that they’ve sent separate legislation to try and re-open the government one program at a time, but the mean ole’ Democrats just won’t let go of that pesky health care law (that has passed every constitutional hurdle and was written and passed completely according to the “rules”), so the government had to be shutdown.
On her show this week, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow made sure to put together some clips that very definitively debunk the notion that Republicans were anything but completely giddy as our government was shutting down last week. Be sure to pass this around to any of your friends who might not fully understand just how badly the right-wing wanted this shutdown, no matter how hard they’re trying to swim away from the anchor attached to their feet over it now.
