On Tuesday’s edition of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” the Comedy Central news parody and commentary show had Richard Dawkins on to discuss his new book. The subject the comedian and the scientist found themselves discussing was whether scientific exploration and achievement or religious fanaticism is more dangerous for the survival of mankind.
Dawkins is one of the most outspoken atheists in the public eye as well as being a foremost scientific author making him the uniquely correct person to have such a discussion with.
Dawkins at one point joked that science and religious fundamentalists could team up by getting weapons of mass destruction into the hands of terrorists, but ultimately Dawkins admitted that science “is the most powerful way to do whatever it is you want to do,” and it doesn’t necessarily choose bad or altruistic consequences itself; that’s up to the person wielding the scientific knowledge. He also said he feels every society has a time in which they can choose to harness their new and wondrous technological advances for good or for bad.
