U.S. Navy commander Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz is in a boatload of hot water. According to Federal prosecutors in his trial, currently being held in San Diego, CA, Misiewicz was involved in a numerous illegal dealings with Malaysian businessman Leonard Francis. Glenn Defense Marine Asia Ltd., the company that Francis owns has been servicing naval ships in Malaysia for a quarter-century. Apparently though, Misiewicz and Francis were exchanging more than friendly handshakes, and Misiewicz was receiving more than just services for the ships under his watch.
In exchange for things like Lady Gaga tickets and prostitutes, Francis and his business had naval vessels intentionally diverted to ports that had much less oversight and allowed Glenn Defense to hyper-inflate the costs of the repairs and services they were performing.
According to court documents, prosecutors are alleging that in 2011 Francis’ company siphoned an additional $11 million from one location alone. There are documents that show in exchange for fleet position and route information, Misiewicz got perks like taking his family to see a production of The Lion King in Tokyo, and that prostitution services were offered at that time as well.
For all their talk of fraud, waste and abuse in the social welfare programs this nation runs, one has to wonder who the first Republican congressman will be who comes out and demands full accountability for this alleged Fraud and abuse will be. One has to wonder when you’ll hear a Republican in a Congressional hearing demanding that something be done about the out of control waste, fraud and abuse in our Department of Defense.
Then again, considering that the Paul Ryan Budget they tout as their ideological fiscal Bible wants to increase DOD spending even more than the Pentagon itself has asked for, no one should hold their breath in waiting for the right-wing to grow a conscience about attacking the working poor, while these kinds of things are happening at the taxpayer’s expense in the name of National Defense.
