Yesterday we brought you the story of a billboard in Northern Indiana that portrayed President Obama with a Hitler mustache and messaging that calls to “IMPEACH OBAMA.” As proof of the power of social media, a Facebook group called “Kick Butt Liberals” was instrumental in getting the sign removed from the Indiana shopping mall billboard on which was being displayed. One member of the group, Charlotte Weybright, saw the local news report on the sign and shared the story on Facebook, getting the Kick Butt Liberals into action.
Helping to orchestrate a public response, Weybright and her fellow liberals stormed down to the Kendallville, IN shopping mall and demonstrated. Other members of her group started a massive calling campaign, flooding local businesses and mayor Suzanne Handshoe’s office with calls about the sign. Handshoe lamented, “All the hard work that we put forward as a community to change our image, to be a positive, growing community, and then a sign like this appears. It just undoes everything we’ve been doing.”
For her part, Weybright said she got involved because the sign “does mark the businesses and the town.” It just goes to show that if enough people care to get the word out and take action, progress can be made. After all, as it turns out there was no other purpose to the sign than to garner attention for LaRouchePAC, the political action committee who paid for the advertisement. The PAC’s spokesman said in a statement that the purpose of the sign was “to stir the pot and let people know that there’s a political fight that’s going on, that’s going on in D.C. and extends out to the regions of the country.”
