CNN anchor Ashleigh Banfield can never be accused of not asking a tough question from time-to-time, thanks to her recent absolute disarming of two hard-right entrenched House Republicans — Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on Monday morning.
While discussing the impending government shutdown and what the impacts would be on various groups, Banfield hit Blackburn and Rohrabacher with a very straightforward but yet trenchant question. Opening with a reminder that both the congressional members are “both paid $174,000 a year,” Banfield then asked bluntly, “Would you be prepared to add some rider or amendment on to a continuing resolution that would take you out of the essential services category and stop payment on your paychecks in order to get a continuing resolution through,” and then she stuck the landing — anticipating an immediate dodge and deflection from the Republcians, “— and yes or no?”
The results? Well, dodging and deflection, of course. What earns Banfield the gold this time around though was her dogged journalistic instinct to keep pressure on them, insisting she was looking for a yes or no and not anything else.
