It seems that the person who posted this video may have neglected to mention a few things. The DCist says that:
“Unfortunately, this video neglects to tell the whole story and is clearly meant to create unrest and misdirect anger,” a spokesperson for 7-Eleven said in an email today. “We have video that has been turned over to local law enforcement of the individual who was not served and who was stealing from the store several times, causing disruption in the store and intimidating other customers. Neither race or racism was a factor in what happened in that video. The franchisee for this store, herself, is Black/African-American, and during the incident on tape another African-American customer was served. We explained this to the Caucasian lady who purchased the chips. She was sorry that she was outspoken against the employees and was sympathetic to their predicament.”
We have not been able to verify this elsewhere, but if true, it’s disgusting that someone would use a very real problem in America today to defame someone who had a good reason not to sell them anything.
********ORIGINAL STORY BELOW*********
A 7-Eleven customer uploaded a disturbing video to Facebook which shows employees at an Alexandria, Virginia location refusing to accept money from an african-American child. The video shows the child, being held by his father, attempting to pay for a bag of chips.
While most would consider this adorable, the three clerks simply stand back and refuse to accept payment for the food. “I would just take the chips and roll out,” said one bystander. “Just sell him the chips, man!”
A white woman nearby asked why they would not sell the little boy his chips. “For no reason,” said the bystander.
“I’m going to buy these chips,” she told the clerks. “And if you don’t sell them to me, I’m going to call the police.” She added, “You all are acting like crazy people! You’re in the customer service business. Ring this up, right now!” She told the clerks, one of whom was identified as the shift manager, “I am going to report you to the 7-Eleven franchise. All three of you. I have your names, and I am going to report you.”
She then handed the bag of chips to the child.
The video was originally posted online by Jeramy Williams, who wrote, “7/11 clerk refuses to sale bag of chips to African American customer for no reason in Alexandria Va. Little Black Boy wouldnt hav gotten the chips if the nice white lady didnt put the money in the clerks hand… must see and share.”
Commenters on the company’s Facebook page let their feelings be known.
7-Eleven has not said much about the incident, but assured those who have made them aware of the incident that they are looking into it.
