A Queens couple allegedly starved and beat their twelve-year-old daughter for two years. Sheetal Ranot, the girl’s stepmother, and her husband, Rajesh Ranot, were arraigned on August 1. The stepmother faces first and second-degree assault and child endangerment charges. The girl’s father faces lesser charges of unlawful imprisonment and assault.
According to prosecutors, the girl was imprisoned and terrorized between December 2012 and July 2014.
The girl was often deprived of food and water and hit with various objects so brutally that, at one point, the girl was found lying in a pool of her own blood.
According to the criminal complaint, Ranot repeatedly hit her stepdaughter, locked her in her bedroom, and starved her for long periods of time.
Sheetal Ranot is accused of kicking her stepdaughter in the face and repeatedly hitting her with a metal broom handle that left a cut near the girl’s knee and a cut on her wrist that was so deep her tendons were exposed, necessitating surgery.
Rajesh ranot allegedly starved his biological daughter for years, and forced her to take cold showers while he beat her with household objects–including a baseball bat–and his fists.
In April, Sheetal hit the girl in the face with a wooden rolling pin, once again sending the child to the hospital. At that time, she weighed 58 pounds and was wearing dirty clothes. Over the next three weeks, the Ranots continued to abuse the unfortunate child. Doctors noticed various bruises, marks, and scars in different stages of healing. An investigation was launched, and the “parents” were arrested shortly afterward.
“Despite the bruising and scarring on her body which served as a silent testament to the violence and cruelty she purportedly endured, it is alleged that for a long time this emaciated child was fearful of disclosing the true nature of her injuries or those responsible for her suffering for fear that her younger step-siblings would be taken away by authorities and placed in foster care,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement. “Fortunately, she found the courage to speak up.”
