Daily Mail Online News reports that Payton Leutner, 12, was brutally attacked by her classmates and supposed best friends in Maukesha, Wisconsin in an attempt to become surrogate killers for the Slender Man.
After premeditating and planning the assault for five months, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, both also 12, lured Payton to Wisconsin’s Nicolet National Forest, 5 miles outside of Maukesha, under the guise of a friendly birthday outing.
Why would a couple of young girls plan on committing such a heinous crime? Why, to gain favor from the Slender Man of course!
The Slender Man is a fictional horror character that gained popularity through online photos and images around 2009. This mythical being is generally described as a tall man, between 6 and 15 feet, in a black suit with a white shirt and black tie. He has no eyes, mouth, hair, or any other defining features. He stalks his prey for years, breaking them down mentally until they become his ‘proxies’ where they speak, act, and kill for him.
These young girls fully believe him to be real, becoming obsessed with him. They wanted to impress him, become his ‘proxies’, and gain access to his private mansion which they believe lies in the northern section of Nicolet National Forest.Geyser was allowed to have friends over for her birthday celebration and had planned with Weier to murder Leutner in her sleep at the Geyser household, but they backed out at the last minute. Payton’s mother, Stacie Leutner, believes that this is why Payton still lives.
They slept at Morgan’s house, and the next morning left for the park. The plan was to play hide-and-seek in the woods and the girls would murder Payton once they were hidden behind the tree cover. As they approached the forest Payton had hesitated, insisting that “something was wrong.” Nevertheless the trio entered, and in the seclusion of the woods Anissa held down a frightened Payton as Morgan viciously and repeatedly stabbed her 19 times about the arms, legs, chest and abdomen. The victim was so badly injured she was unable to see or walk, and believing her to have stopped breathing, they left her to die lying on the forest floor in a pool of her own blood.
But Payton was not dead.
Slowly and painfully, she dragged herself out of the woods where a passing cyclist discovered her and called authorities.
Police located the two culprits several hours later in a furniture store where they found the weapon in Weier’s backpack.
If convicted as adults, Geyser and Weier face up to 60 years in prison for attempted homicide. If convicted as juveniles, they will be incarcerated until they reach the age of 25 under state law.
Weier is currently undergoing competency tests to determine if she is mentally competent enough to undergo trial while Geyser has already been diagnosed by multiple doctors as mentally incompetent to stand trial.
