The first step towards fixing a problem is admitting that you have a problem. This is going to be hard, but here it goes:
America, you have a gun problem.
In less than 7 hours early Sunday, 12 people were shot — two fatally — in New York City. According to police, the wave of violence that swept over the city began around 12:30am in the Huntspoint section of the Bronx, where a man was shot in the back.
Less than two hours later, in East Harlem, four more people were shot in a flurry of gunfire that exploded on the corner of 135th street and Harlem River Drive.
After that, a 16-year-old boy was shot through the thigh, a 21-year-old man shot in the heel, an 18-year-old man shot in the left eye, and a 21-year-old woman grazed by a bullet in the torso.
At 3:15am, a 42-year-old Staten Island man was shot in the face. The shooting took place on Amboy Road, near Bishop Street. The gunman reportedly fled in a black pickup truck.
Less than hour later, a Brownsville man was fatally shot, and two others wounded, on Tapscott Street and Sutter Avenue.
At around 4:00am and more than a mile away, a 23-year-old man was struck in the leg by a bullet and grazed by another on the neck.
An hour later and back in Bronx, a 29-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest. In that incident, the police reportedly have a suspect in custody and have recovered the weapon.
Finally, around sunrise and at about 7:00am, a 25-year-old Brooklyn man was shot on Wortman Avenue. His injuries aren’t life threatening.
It’s our understanding that there were so many shootings early this morning that the Good Guy With A Gun was unable to keep up with them all.
This comes just after the instance in Kensington, where man was killed on Friday for holding up traffic, and an incident on Wednesday, where a Pennsylvania woman drew a gun and fired on children who were playing with squirt guns.
